Admission Requirement

These programme will not open for application since 1 August 2017 because they had been mergeed into a new programme.

Below are the admission requirement for the existing students.

All applicants must fulfill the general qualifications for admission and the English Language Proficiency Requirement prescribed by the Graduate School.

Master of Science Programme:

1.
Medical Graduates from an approved programme or university; OR
2.
Non-medical Graduates with a health care related degree, such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Prosthetic & Orthotic (or Biomedical Engineering with P&O major), Nursing, Chinese Medicine, Podiatry or Dietetics, will be considered on an individual basis; OR
3.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Rehabilitation programme, with satisfactory performance; and
4.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the admission process; and
5.
Past academic record, work experience, references and language abilities will be considered in the admission decision.

Postgraduate Diploma Programme:

1.
Graduates from any medical or health care disciplines, such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Prosthetic & Orthotic (or Biomedical Engineering with P&O major), Nursing, Chinese Medicine, Podiatry or Dietetics, will be considered in an individual basis.; OR
2.
Other registered healthcare professionals in Hong Kong will be considered in an individual basis.
3.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the admission process; and
4.
Past academic record, work experience, references and language abilities will be considered in the admission decision.

Schedule and Venue

Fundamental Modules: Every Wednesday (some might held on Friday) at 6.30pm - 9.30pm
Advanced Modules: Every Monday at 6.30pm - 9.30pm
Workshops, Symposia & Fieldworks: Friday night, and Saturday and/or Sunday in full day/half day
/Dissertation, Practicum / Clinical Attachment: subject to arrangement with supervisor

*note: Modules might contains lectures and other components. Year plan will be announced in late July.
The venue would mainly be at Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, N.T. or The Chinese University of Hong Kong campus.

Mode and Duration of Study

Master of Science Programme: Full-time study normally for one year, with maximum study period of three years; or
                                                 Part-time study normally for two years, with maximum study period of four years.

Postgraduate Diploma Programme: Part-time study normally for one year. Maximum study period is three years.

Note: Continuation fee might be charged for studies over normative period. Students will be terminated over maximum period.

Programme Structure

1.
There are 3 categories of modules, including core modules, specialty modules, and self-initiated/hot issues modules.  Students are required to select the modules on their own interests and study plan accordingly.
2.
Course contents deliver through lectures, workshops, interactive case presentation and discussion, study tour, clinical attachment, prescribed self-study reading and multi-media video.
3.
There are three terms in each academic year, starting from September to July (Special arranged lecture might be held on August between year 1 & 2.

Course Information (2016-18)

Credit Units Required:

To be eligible for the award, a student shall complete:-
15 credit units in one year for Postgraduate Diploma programme;
30 credit units in two-year for Part-time Master of Science programme, or
30 credit units in one-year for Full-time Master of Science programme

Module Selection Criteria:

For Postgraduate Diploma programme, student select 6 credits or above from Group 1 modules;
For Master of Science programme, student MUST select modules MSMR6401, 6312 & 6421 from Group 1 modules in the whole course, and free to select more;

There is no restriction for selecting Group 2 modules, but some modules have pre-requisite relations

Students cannot select more than 3 units of Group 3 self-initiated modules for each academic year. Some modules have pre-requisite relations

Brief course description:
This is an introduction to the spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders and Rehabilitation issues related to Principle of occupational orthopaedics, background, medicolegal aspects and psychosocial aspect of occupational orthopaedics; Impairment, disability and social standing: assessment and function; Management of specific medical and musculoskeletal problems; Chronic medical condition, Women, children and elderly, musculoskeletal, cognitive impaired patient; Occupation assessment and the work environment; Assessment of work capacity and impairment; Return to work programmes and barriers

Current Diagnosis and Management for Musculoskeletal Disorders  
(3 credit units)

Brief course description:
An introduction to the current techniques and technologies for diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders and the principles of management, with coverage over non-operative means, alternative medicine, and also principles of surgical intervention especially for arthritis.

Pain Management & Psychosocial Aspects of Rehabilitation    
(3 credit units)

Brief course description:
Pain in particular chronic pain of the musculoskeletal system is closely linked to psychosocial consequences of disability and proper management is the key to rehabilitation. The new arrangement will provide a holistic approach, and enables participants to explore more deeply the psychosocial issues that arise from musculoskeletal impairments and disabilities and to prepare them for further studies in health counseling or behaviour therapy. In addition the causes, nature and types of musculoskeletal pain are discussed, and introduction to management including the psychosocial interventions, medications, interventional treatments and alternative treatments including Chinese medicine.

Rehabilitation Case Seminar

Brief course description:
In this course participants will have opportunity to present and discuss management of rehabilitation problems with interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary approaches.
MSMR6401 Research Methodology & Biostatistics
(3 credit units)  (Compulsory to MSc Programme)
  Brief course description:
This course aims to provide basic knowledge of Biostatistics and Research Methodology.

Dissertation

Brief course description:
The dissertation will be an extended essay of 5000 words on a review of a clinical problem in rehabilitation.

  Brief course description:
This is a special extended module for eligible students who wish to undertake an extended clinical project that involves the trial of new interventions or comparison of treatment modalities.

Brief course description:
Rehabilitation technology is fast developing and finds the most applications in spinal cord injury and amputation for musculoskeletal disorders. Combining the previously independent courses into a single course provides a better integrated delivery of information and application.

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: Special Problems & Management Issues  
(3 credit units)  

Brief course description:
Assessment and rehabilitation requirements for different body regions will be covered systemically, highlighting their special requirements. This would include rehabilitation for tendon and nerve injuries in the upper extremities, rehabilitation of ligamental injuries in the lower limbs (especially related to sports injuries), and back rehabilitation. Special issues will cover rehabilitation for joint replacement, major and multiple fractures (e.g. pelvic fractures)
MSMR6332 Practicum in Musculoskeletal Medicine & Rehabilitation I
(2 credit units)
  Brief course description:
This programme provides participants with supervised practical experience in one or more chosen fields of rehabilitation or musculoskeletal medicine, so as to broaden their understanding of the different practices in rehabilitation or musculoskeletal medicine, and to deepen their skills or to acquire new skills. Participants should expect to spend one session per week on their chosen field(s) for roughly 6 months, together with tutorials and assignments to fulfill the programme requirements. Participants will propose a programme that best suit their needs, which will be refined with the help of tutors.
MSMR6333 Practicum in Musculoskeletal Medicine & Rehabilitation II (Practice Based)
(2 credit units)
  Brief course description:
This programme is a second practicum rotation, and the format is simiilar as Practicum (1), in order to enhance students to appraise their current practice in terms of musculoskeletal rehabilitation and to develop a framework on how they may improve their work or to implement what they have learned from the programme.

Unit Exemption

1.
Student satisfactorily completed Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Rehabilitation with overall GPA of 2.6 may be exempted for up to 15 credit units.

Graduation Requirements

1.
Attendance of all practicum;
2.
All students must have a minimum of 75% attendance at each course, and meet all course assessments before they can apply to sit for the final examination. They are required to pass the final examination or any supplementary assessment before they can gradate;
3.
Completed 15 credit units for Postgraduate Diploma, or 30 credit units of Master in Sciences, with GPA > 2.0 and 75% attendance;

Application for admission to the Master of Sciences/Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine for 2018-2019 will not be opened due to the merging of programmes.
