BIOGRAPHY
Dr Ong is part of the Sports Medicine and Arthroplasty Team (SMART) and the head of the adult joint reconstruction division. His clinical service covers both the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital which is one of the designated joint replacement centres of Hong Kong, with a combined total of over 700 major joint surgeries performed annually. As a regional leader and internationally recognised expert in robot-assisted arthroplasty, he is the consultant in charge of the CUHK Visiting Surgeon Program for Robot-assisted Arthroplasty. Dr Ong is the Chief Censor of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons (HKCOS) and he is also the Honorary Treasurer of the Hong Kong Orthopaedic Association (HKOA). In addition, he is the past president of the Sports Medicine Chapter of the HKOA. Dr Ong is also a Board Member and the sub-committee chair of Arthroplasty of the Asia-Pacific Knee, Arthroscopy, and Sports Medicine Society (APKASS) and the board member of Asian Shoulder Elbow Association (ASEA), Arthroplasty Society in Asia (ASIA), demonstrating his work is recognised within the field of Sports Medicine, Adult Joint Reconstruction as well as Orthopaedic Professional Organizations.
His research interest focuses on adult joint reconstruction, including degenerative knees and hips, and sports medicine, including shoulder and knee injuries and he also has a special interest in research in muscle function and biomaterials. Dr Ong has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications in top scientific and clinical journals, and he holds multiple awards and grants for research excellence. Dr Ong has secured multiple research grants from local, regional, and international granting bodies.
Dr Ong is a keen educator, and he teaches both the undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students, providing didactic lectures and bedside clinical teachings. He is the med 4 coordinator and he is also an examiner for the med 4 and med 6 exams. Dr Ong has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students, and he is the Deputy Program Director of the MSc in Musculoskeletal Medicine, Rehabilitation and Geriatric Orthopaedics (MRGO) program and the Assistant Program Director for the MSc in Sports Medicine and Health Science (SMHS) program.
