BIOGRAPHY
Professor Cheung graduated with a PhD from the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology at CUHK in 2000 and joined the academic staff in 2005. He is currently a Professor and Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory in the Department of O&T at CUHK. Additionally, he serves as an Investigator at the Musculoskeletal Ageing Laboratory, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, CUHK. His research interests include fracture healing, osteoporotic fractures, sarcopenia, and mechanical stimulation. He also serves as a researcher at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Research Institute (FITRI) and the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute.
Prof. Cheung's research primarily focuses on understanding and improving osteoporotic fracture healing and sarcopenia, as well as the effects of mechanical stimulation on bone & muscle health. His work on low-magnitude high-frequency vibration (LMHFV) treatment has been particularly influential, demonstrating its potential to enhance fracture healing and mitigate the effects of sarcopenia. This innovative approach has been successfully translated into a non-invasive treatment aimed at improving musculoskeletal health, especially in the elderly population, and has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA.
He is a member of the editorial boards of several international journals and an ad hoc reviewer for over 50+ professional journals. He also serves as a reviewer for the AO Foundation and several European Research Grant Councils. Prof. Cheung is a committee member of ISFR and FFN-HKSAR, an active member of ORS and a lifetime member of ICMRS. He has published 170 peer-reviewed international articles, 11 book chapters, and over 390 conference abstracts, and has contributed as an editor for one book. He has received 30+ research awards, including the Berton Rahn Research Fund of the AO Foundation in 2013, the Healthstar Osteoporosis Medical-Research Award (HOMA) in 2020, and a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2024. He also holds 7 patents (1 PCT, 3 US, 2 China, 1 UK).
