BIOGRAPHY
Prof. YUNG Shu Hang Patrick, a MBChB graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1994, working in Hospital Authority and underwent Orthopaedic specialist training in Prince of Wales Hospital thereafter, and joined CUHK as a Clinical Professor in 2016. Recognized as a global leader in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Professor YUNG is the current Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, of CUHK, focused on Orthopaedics sport medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He serves as the leader of a lot of international & local centers of sports medicine & health science, including being the Vice President of international Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), Past President of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM), Past President of the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science (HKASMSS), as well as the Past President of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also the Director of the Hong Kong Centre of Sports Medicine and Sports Science, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, and the Centre of Neuromusculoskeletal Restorative Medicine (CNRM) of InnoHK research centers.
A keen researcher and educator, Professor YUNG leads a team of CUHK members devoted to making advances in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He has published over 300 scientific papers in international journals, contributing significantly to the establishment of Hong Kong’s leading position in sports medicine. Being the director & co-directors of two startup companies based in HKSTP, with the support of fundings from HK Government through InnoHK and RAISe+ schemes, Prof. Yung leverages world-class academic researchers together, with the dynamic spirit of innovation, aiming to translate science in regenerative medicine & tissue engineering into real-world biomedical products, benefiting human being suffering from different musculoskeletal disorder, conjoining different efforts to strengthen Hong Kong as the leading biomedical R&D hub internationally. As the head of the first ever Master Course in Sports Medicine & Health Science in Hong Kong & Asia - he has trained over 1200 medical professionals in the field of sports medicine since 2004. He also conducted hundreds of training courses to teach people ranging from amateur sports lovers to medical professionals about the management of sports injuries, from delivering emergency care on the field to the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. In his capacity as director of the Orthopaedic Learning Centre (OLC) of CUHK, he has contributed to the training and development of more than 12,000 Orthopaedics surgeons from all over the world over the past 20 years.
Professor YUNG is also an experience sports surgeon committed to delivering medical services in amateur and professional sports communities in Hong Kong, China & overseas. As Medical Consultant for the Hong Kong Sports Institute, he has been volunteering his services for athletes of Hong Kong’s elite sports teams and has been holding a weekly clinic at the Hong Kong Sports Institute since 2001. He is also the Team Physician for Hong Kong teams competing in many major national & international sports tournaments, providing and coordinating medical supports for HK elite athletes. His commitment to the promotion of sports medicine education and delivery of clinical services extend to public amateur sports lovers, as he has been serving sports teams across all levels (primary, secondary and college level) in the community. He is also an active member of the Medical Committee of the Asian Football Federation (AFC), and an experience Anti-Doping Officer conducting Anti-Doping works as well as being chief medical officer in major local and international sports competitions for the last 20 years. He remains an active member of the Anti-Doping Organization of Hong Kong & the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and is a key figure in Anti- Doping in Asian football.
Professor YUNG is known for his selfless dedication to community service in promoting sports participation as an important part of an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as advocating for safety in sports for all participants. In his capacity as the Chairman of the Community Sports Committee, the Chairman of the Student Sports Activities Co-ordinating Sub-committee of The Government of HKSAR as well as in his functions of Member of the Sports Commission of the Government of HKSAR, Professor YUNG advises the Hong Kong government on strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting community participation in sports, particularly in schools. He also works on fostering partnerships between different sectors of the community to promote major community sports programs, develop territory-wide community sports facilities, improve existing sports facilities, as well as promoting “Exercise is Medicine” in the community.
Professor YUNG’s commitment to community services has helped make Hong Kong a global leader in the field of Sport Medicine & Arthroscopy Surgery. In recognition of his local and international contributions in the advancement of Sports Medicine & Health Science, he has been awarded the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong” in 2009, the “FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) Fellows” in 2011, the “Award of Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation Scheme” of the Government of HKSAR in 2015. He also received the prestigious “Chinese Sports Medicine Magnolia Award” in 2017, the highest “Takagi & Watanabe Award” of Asia Pacific Knee Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine Society in 2018 as well as the “Golden Cradle Award” of the Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association in 2018 and the “Hong Kong Health Award” in 2018. He was made “Justice of the Peace” and awarded the “Medal of Honor” by the Government of Hong Kong SAR in 2018 and 2021 respectively, as well as being awarded the highest & most prestigious medical award of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) – “The AFC Football Medicine Merit Award” in 2025.
