BIOGRAPHY
Gang Li is a full non-clinical professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received MBBS at the Fourth Military Medical University, Xian, China (1991) and D. Phil. at the University of Oxford School of Medicine, England, UK (1998). Previously he was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader (1998-2009), at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, School of Medicine, Queen's University, Belfast, UK. Prof Li holds valid PR China Medical Doctor Qualification Certificate and PR China Medical Practicing License (Surgery) and has honorary appointments in several orthopaedic surgery departments in PR China.
The focuses of Prof. Li’s research work are on biological mechanisms and novel clinical applications of distraction histogenesis; stem cell biology and cell therapy applications in musculoskeletal tissue engineering. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed SCI articles with citations over 21,000 and H index 73 (Google scholar 09-2023; https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=zh-CN&user=YIGsB6QAAAAJ&view); 16 book chapters and 3 books on tissue engineering, bone biology, distraction histogenesis and Ilizarov techniques. He is currently a honorary council member of Chinese Orthopaedic Research Society; Chinese ORS Representative to International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (ICORS); Vice Chairman, Branch of Regenerative Biomaterials, Chinese Association of Materials; Co-Chairman of ILLRS and ASAMI China Branch. He is executive associate editor for Journal of Orthopaedic Translation (IF: 6.6); editor for Calcified Tissue International, Bone and Joint Research, Bone and Journal of Orthopaedic Research. Prof Li holds honorary or visiting Professorship at many prestigious universities such as Monash University, Australia; University of Science, Malaysia; South-East University Medical School, China; The Airforce Medical University, China; Gong Dong Medical University and Jilin University Medical School, etc. His work received serval awards including 1st Class Award in Science Advances, Ministry of Science and Technology, PR China (2020); 1st Class Research Award in Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, China (2015); 2nd Class Award in Medical Science and Technology, China Medical Association (2018). He is elected as fellow of International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (FIORS) in 2016 and fellow of American Orthopaedic Research Society (FORS) in 2020.
From 2020 to 2022, he has been on the list of the world's top 2% scientists (ranked among the 1% of the world's top scientists in 2022). In 2023, he ranked 9th of the top 100 scholars in the field of orthopaedic surgery in PR China (https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/kA3JeKDbsENAeBgpRfg82A). In 2023, Prof Li is ranked 37 among the best CUHK Professors across all driplines over 500 professors and ranked 2618 (world) and 50 National of the best scientists in the Biology and Biochemistry category (https://research.com/university/the-chinese-university-of-hong-kong).
